El programa tiene como objetivos:

• Producir más código de software libre para el beneficio común;
• Inspirar a los estudiantes a participar en proyectos de software libre;
• Ayudar a los proyectos de software libre a identificar y atraer nuevos desarrolladores;
• Permitir a los estudiantes de ciencia de la computación la oportunidad de realizar trabajos relacionados a su profesión;
• Exponer a los estudiantes a escenarios reales de desarrollo de software (ejm. desarrollo distribuido, aspectos de licenciamento, etc)

Los requisitos para participar en este programa son básicamente dos:

• Tener una idea y proyecto al que desea contribuir,
• Ser estudiante de alguna carrera relacionada a ciencia de la computación (computer science) o ingeniería de software. Aunque también han participado estudiantes de áreas como biología o ingeniería de minas.

Esta vez y por 3er año consecutivo el Proyecto Debian participará como «mentoring organization». Para esto hemos creado una página wiki con las actividades y propuestas de proyectos para el SoC 2008 de Debian.

Como desarrollador Debian estaré participando en la coordinación del programa por parte del Proyecto Debian con Google junto a Steve y Neil, asi que no duden en escribirme o contactarme en caso tengan alguna pregunta o duda al respecto. En la página wiki del SoC 2008 tenemos una lista de ideas y proyectos, que todavía sigue abierta.

A través de este post quiero invitar a los estudiantes peruanos de computación a animarse a participar en este programa, que además de darles la posibilidad de una experiencia enriquecedora profesionalmente, pueden obtener un ingreso económico y contribuir al software libre. Existe una plantilla que recomiendo leer para enterarse de la información que necesitamos y que pueden utilizar en caso deseen proponer un nuevo proyecto.

Las fechas importantes para los estudiantes son:
25 de febrero: anuncio del programa.
2 de marzo: las organizaciones tutoras pueden enviar sus propuestas a Google
24 de marzo: inicio de periodo de solicitudes de estudiantes
31 de marzo: final de periodo de solicitudes de estudiantes
11 de abril: registro y asignación de tutor para cada estudiante
14 de abril: publicación de propuestas aceptadas code.google.com/soc/. Periodo de inmersión de estudiantes, presentación de tutores, leer documentación, etc.
26 de mayo: inicio de programación y emisión del pago inicial por parte de Google.
7 de julio: envío de evaluaciones parciales
14 de julio: fecha final de envío de evaluaciones parciales. Google realiza el segundo pago
11 de agosto: fecha sugerida para «pencils down».
18 de agosto: fecha final de «pencils down». Incio de envío de evaluación final a Google
1 de setiembre: fecha final de evaluación. Google inicia el pago.
2 de setiembre: estudiantes envían ejemplos solicitados de código a Google

involucrate.org has born as a project focused on building an environment to foster a real free software community focused on technical contribution and making our country have a larger spot on the free software contributors world-map.

The lack of appropiate models and the inhability to stablish a link between the real actors on such scenary have led to a poor involvement and groups atomization for "ideological" or political means, making room for "religionization" of a very technical and licensing model matter where debate over technical aspects have gone 0.

Our manifesto (in Spanish) explains our vision and mission, and also how we expect to achieve such a challenging goal. Is in our will to link our academic people, who was somehow behind the walls (a luxury for a country like mine), and the other actors here and globally. We want our talented people to see globally, and offer our life-experience on the field to make them aware and show them the opportunities that they can have and how other people near us who are making it right!.

This time, thanks to the wonderful guys at GNOME Foundation, we are having our very first international conference called involucrate+GOME focused on free software development and, as we expect to be, be the first step of a series of world-class events where we expect to set a yearly world-known free software event here in Peru. Something we dodn't have after more than 10 years since the first group of people gathered together to discuss which is the best distro or something like that and the discussion is still ongoing.

As noted the conference will be focused mostly, well almost 90%, in GNOME, but we expect to have more editions dedicated to one or more projects. So, I invite you to check our program and our cool speakers, all from south america and all contributing on GNOME.

Of course you are invited to attend to, if you happen to like us! Bring your questions and contributions to this initiative to both our project web or DebianPeru web who is coordinating this initiative, I mean this is almost a debianite sub-project ;)

I want to say as a side-note, that despite what media has made people think, we are making a real cool relationship with the chilean community. Expect to hear from us soon, and not because we've buying more wine from Chile and they are importing real pisco from Peru, or because we'll mimic our presidents. I really like this time, it comes 10 years late, however!

Creemos que en nuestro país existe un grupo de personas con el potencial y conocimientos académicos básicos para introducirse y participar en el desarrollo de los proyectos de software libre. Sin embargo, por diversas situaciones y por la ausencia de auténticos modelos y vínculos adecuados entre estos ámbitos, no se ha dado dicha conexión. Es así como nace involucrate.org, un proyecto que busca establecer un entorno que ayude a que la gente pueda romper la barrera de querer a empezar a participar.

Es grato anunciar que como parte de las actividades orientadas a desarrollar dicho entorno, este verano estaremos realizando un evento de nivel internacional y corte académico en el que acercaremos a las personas que están desarrollando para proyectos de software libre, como GNOME y Debian, con el público y personas interesadas en conocer más acerca del desarrollo y con ganas de introducirse en ese mundo.

Este evento, en mi opinión, además de marcar un antes y un después en el nivel de calidad técnica de los eventos realizados en perú por la comunidad de software libre, así como su organización y estructura; será el punto de partida de una serie de actividades orientadas a poner a Perú en el radar de software libre en el mundo por su actividad técnica y de contribución. Seguimos trabajando para que así sea, y desde ya puedo comentar que hasta el momento contamos con el respaldo de la Fundación GNOME, y posiblemente tengamos más novedades dentro de poco.

En nuestro sitio web, que está en pleno desarrollo, podrás encontrar mayores detalles sobre este esfuerzo, nuestro esquema de trabajo, las actividades realizadas y una serie de material que hemos producido que esperamos que sirva de impulso y motive a las personas a dar el salto a la acción, ¡ya mismo!.

Si estas interesado en participar o apoyar en este esfuerzo estaremos gustosos de contar contigo. Además, invitamos a las personas que participan en otros proyectos a unirse a este espacio y promoverlos, ya que aunque la coordinación está a cargo de DebianPerú, no es excluyente de otras iniciativas. Katia y yo, año tres. Feliz aniversario.

The most affected city is Ica and the surrounding cities, since the epicenter was 45km from the shore. There has been building damages, and houses felt down, the reports are very bad. Till now there are almost 20 people passed away and 200 with injuries. It have affected some places in Lima too, some buildings have clashed and there's many energy issues and the whole telecommunications system have collapsed and by now is still coming back. President Garcia, have gone against telcos in his last appereance on national TV, since it's unacceptable to have this situation and have people freak out in desperation.

I'm not sure how the city will look today (16), the airport have suspended domestic flights and the common feeling is concern. I haven't seen people so worried in my life here. Two people have passed away due heart attack in Lima. Government have declared national emergency and the school classes have been suspended, emergency groups are departing Ica to help them out.

The has been an evacuation for people at La Punta, Callao. But they have ordered people to go back home, however they have been advised to be ready for evacuate to other places far from the coast. Authorities say that the sea is calm now and the tsunami alert has been deactivated and discarded so people there can go back home.

Now things are mostly calm, however according monitoring centers such seismon there's still activity, so we have to be alert. Let's hope those 3 ones after the main one, are enough to calm down the earth.

In this whole tragedy Internet has been working and being very important for communicating, text messaging was also working intermitently. I'm trying to give updates on my twitter's page. Update: News from Ica are getting worst, I take the ocasion to people from the international community to help to deal with this situation.

I might said that I still haven't loose faith that our country will be well represented, but probably this will be more related to pisco drinkage than himself, anyway have fun and bring us something else than stickers!.
