Todavía no he completado este pequeño artículo que me he propuesto a escribir cuando tenga algún tiempito por ahi. ¿que ha ocurrido? ha ocurrido que en muchos grupos de "usuarios de Linux" se esta dando un fenómeno preocupante, y que no solamente es un tema que atañe a estos grupos sino que podría repercutir en el futuro del software libre y su exponente mayor como es el sistema GNU/Linux.

Espero pronto tener listo algunas líneas de este breve articulo, ya aparecerá por aquí cuando este listo.

Mañana tenemos una invitación a una presentación de Novell oficina local, nose si llevar mi banner de Debian nuevamente :) heh veremos que sucede, también debemos tener una reunión para ver el tema del evento que pensamos organizar, por cierto tengo que corregir el documento. me voy.

I was IRC'ing then Manuel pointed out a GL game for GNU/Linux, I went to the site and I've got impressed for it, game is named torcs it's a 3D car racing (oh yeah I should confess that I'm not a computer gamer because I think games can be played in game-specific devices and in general I'm not a videogamer, but car racing is the one that turns me in a video game addict!). Well, I instantly tought that it could be something cool to put on Debian-Jr packages, so I quickly checked if it was packaged, it wasn't and the Debian package they offer is for former version. So I downloaded and put on my TODO list.

Just a couple of days after I've saw an email to debian-jr mailing list with an RFP, si I replied and tell them that I intent to work on it, I had replies backing me up. Today I've played around with it, it looks good until now, I should finish it by tomorrow or weekend, then test a while and upload to mentors.

DWN: I've been working for a while with DWN spanish translations, is something I feel attached in some way since it's one of my initial contributions to the project. Now seems like I'm going to coordinate the team since Ignacio is quite busy and he asked me to second him. Of course I've accepted.

Parece que la rutina es buena en algún momento, luego te aburres y luego no quieres rutinas y haces las cosas como vengan, luego dices que necesitas ordén... vaya! ¿a donde llegaremos asi? ¿alguien tiene la receta?

Estoy con los días algo movidos, he tenido reuniones para ver varios temas respecto de eventos y afines acerca de software libre, se ha avanzado bien asi que espero que todos ellos salgan.

Estuve jugando un poco mas con este motorcito y la verdad que cada día me deja mas a gusto con él, ya he colocado algunas cosas mas como el plugin de commentarios y le pondre un par de cosas mas, en mis pendientes están el generar un RSS para una única categoría, por ejm. solo los posts de /debian, mejorar el resumen de posts añadiendole las categorías y los posts que hay en éstas por mes y alguna otra payada.

Looks like I've become a translation robot heh, I've translated my pending DWN work so quickly yay! Now I'm focusing in po files, I'm starting to like that :) anyway my plans are to take care of News/ on Debian site and finish the pending translation work.
Hint:
I've (finally) set my system wide locales to es_PE, this way I can "feel" the user experience and work on what needs to be fixed/improved. Before I was using en_US for my personal user, I'm happy with the change! since it helps to make my work better.

In other news, I've updated the hoz package, fixed some packaging issues and upload to mentors. I've also received another bug report for usbmgr yay! heh Will work on that at night, now I need to sleep.

I had a little fun of packaging, new upstream version of hoz I've converted its .ico icon to xpm, so now it looks nice in X, I've also did some bugfixing for usbmgr asked for more information for one of them, I'm close to figure out where is the infamous #175847 bug. Some l10n updates for debhelper translations, DWN work almost done 2003 pending issues.

I've also played with admin.php for DebConf4 site, I couldn't work on gnuplot graphics for that :( I hope this week I can have time to work on that.

Tuvimos una reunión con algunos miembros de APESOL para ver algunos temas concernientes al plan anual y otros, se tocaron temas interesantes que ya era tiempo de tocarlos y parece que vamos a trabajar mas en este tema lo cual sera muy importante y beneficioso para la institución.

Estoy trabajando con drupal para el nuevo sitio web de la asociación se ve interesante, espero tenerlo listo pronto.

También tuvimos la reunión sobre el proyecto (todavía secreto, pero ya no tanto) del evento que pretendemos organizar, de momento todo va bien y estamos muy entusiasmados al respecto. Yo creo que si trabajamos bien y de forma profesional esto sale si o si.

Here's the funny thing, they wasn't aware that they have deleted my account already! I mean they don't keep track of it or they are making good jokes? :)

I've spend last sunday working on admin.php script for DebConf4 website, this page is intented to give some administrative tools and statistics for organization team. By monday I got a 'feature' request from Andreas, so as I'm a goddamn improvement maniac, i did a nicer stats page by monday, numbers are pretty interesting also. We've noticed that most of Debian hackers are > L T-Shirt size heh

I also messed for a while with drupal which is the CMS that we are using for DebConf4 site. I had an issue while trying to put some embed PHP on a block, it was db connection related but I workaround it patching mysql.module.inc and re-selecting drupal's db. I've found some interesting thing on this CMS and I'm thinking seriously to mantain it and of course use it, let's see what comes first.

I've also got answer to my RFS form -mentors Joshua Kwan, pointed out some issues on my package and I've fixed them, now it's cleaner and looks good, let's see if someone or even himself sponsors me. And i've got filled to usbmgr, one came with a patch (thanks Peter) and I'll have to work on the other and those which still left to solve.

And finally, I've worked on a DWN summary report for pending transtions for 2003 and 2004. We need to be on date! I'm takin over 2003's ones, so I hope people focus on 2004 issues. I've also had to do some revisions to debhelper translations that i've made and now they have updates, geez...

Yo creo que pocas veces he 'evangelizado' a una persona acerca del software libre, en general hago eso en mis charlas o presentaciones y luego al final alguno se acerca y conversamos, pero, hasta donde recuerdo, no lo habia hecho en forma directa con una persona.

De todas formas creo que se entendio la idea, y saque algunas lecciones:
- Encontrar mas ejemplos comunes para explicar la filosofía
- Encontrar la forma de no basar la explicación en el lado técnico y buscar mas por el lado social, que de paso es el que me interesa.
- Creo que no lo hice mal, beware!

Por otro lado por ahi con un amigo, tambien usuario de software libre y miembro conocido dentro de la comunidad, estamos trabajando una idea que esperemos salga porque pienso es muy importante que se haga. Mas noticias cuando haya algo concreto al respecto.

Pues eso, desde ayer estoy usando la versión 2.6.2 del núcleo Linux en jane (nombre de mi pc de escritorio) he notado algunos cambios en desempeño todavía no he probado realmente pero hay cierta mejora en el sistema, tuve que cambiar la configuración de los módulos ya que algunos han cambiado de nombre por ejm. el módulo para mi tarjeta de sonido se llama ahora snd-ymfpci antes lo cargaba con insmod ymfpci y también tuve que cambiar los enlaces para la lectora y grabador de CD, que ahora ya no usa la emulación SCSI sino directamente accede al dispositivo, aunque todavía no he grabado nada pero deberia funcionar.

Hasta ahora el desempeño va bien asi que le pondre también a killingmoon (mi iBook) que todavía tiene la 2.4.22.

I'm starting to found funny to hack on PHP, well I'm not actually a PHP fan/developer, I've wrote many stuff for fun/need using PHP, but nothing as pro, anyway as I use to say "If it's needed to be done in [____] it will".

I've finished some admin script for DebConf4 regisration, it's a page for administrative taks, by now it has only statistics (very interesting). My plans are to add more features, like manage registrations, edit stuff and some other stuff, ideas are welcome...

I've also done some l10n-es work, finished DWN 2004/26 but work is still pending... I have to order my life (real and computing) hehe, I need to make a projects tracker, central todo list and more if not I'll get insane (yeah more that am I) that'd be nothing good for the world :)

I've uploaded Tabo's hoz to mentors archive, so now people can install it into their system using apt-get yay!.
btw, i have a feature request, it should have size suffixes like M for Megabyte, k for kilobyte and etc, so one can put -c 1M to split the file in 1 Megabyte pieces each.

Today I was irc^Wworking then a friend told me "see slashdot now!", I said ok, then I've found that it seems that Microsoft's source code for Win2k and WinNT has been leaked and is going all over internet. By now Microsoft has made an official statement about it, they said they are investigating.

Besides that, from a free software and also Open Source perspective this could be a dangerous thing, in one hand we have those which are saying "hey, it's cool now we can see how to implement Microsoft's propietary things in FLOSS projects", there are also those who say "Well, the thing is out there, anything can happen, so I'll take a look on it then forget about the bussiness". There are a few ones who are clever enough at this time to figure this thing out. I'd like to talk about this last ones and why we should listen to them.

We all know the SCO case and all threats that such corporations are doing to FLOSS, now we all know that the number of propietary software for GNU/Linux platform is growing. Now, this 'code release' will benefit or not to FLOSS projects? I, as those ones I talk about, think that it will not. Why? because there's a danger a very hidden danger most people don't realize, besides the technical issues, which are not my focus, there are legal and ethical issues.

What can happen? If one developer of a FLOSS project takes any piece of code from this source he/she is doing a potential harm to the project, becuase they can claim it's copyright ownership over the piece of code, over the "yet another patented software" and do too much harm to FLOSS comunity. We should avoid to download even see it, since it's supossed to be under copyright protection and NDA (for those who had the granted access) they may start "yet another witch hunt", so I ask you please to think about it before do it. Think about why and how FLOSS comunity worked to have what we have now, all the effort they and we made.

Finally I want to address this "oh yes once again the zealot" issue, which is propietary programs running on top of free OSes. Besides the goods that is to have companies putting and investing on Linux and writing/porting their programs to this platform, there's an important issue which is the freedom. It started free and since there step by step it's getting contaminated for non-free software, why we should allow this people to do that? there are no free alternatives? there are no work needing free software projects?.
By allowing or installing non-free software you are not caring anymore for your freedom, you are permiting those ones who you pint out as "the enemy" to be on your home and rule over your information, thus restricting your freedom. So if you *do* care about it please think three times before installing a non-free software.

We don't want the free software which has been built with lots of effort and meant to keep it's freedom being contaminated and eventually extinted due such things as I've wrote here, so please if you haven't thought about this before do it now, think about what's more important to you, your freedom? your information? your comodity? Keeping our software free we allow coming people to have a free choice and world.

I've just received a CC email from Martin Michlmayr asking me if I'm able to meet some .cl guy who is in the NM process, he's going to come here and I've replied that yes I'll. So this is going to be the .pe/.cl keysign meeting, interesting huh?, let's see if we can solve boundaries issues allowing Chile to be part of Perú again :)

In other news, I've updated the new upstream version of hoz now it gets 1.63, and did some l10n for DWN 2004/06 and uploaded my minihowto to contribute translating DWN, Erick Lopez also published a similar document, so eventually we'll merge them.

DebConf4 registration is going fine, no bug reports until now (yay!) and all seems to be working as meant. Now I'll have to hack on registration admin pages, seems it will be just another PHP hacking weekend, isn't my life interesting?

Yes, I was one of those who drove himself as crazy to register in Orkut without read their terms of use. Someone pointed out that recently and I've took my time to read it, for my surprise there are very very bad things which I strongly disagree with, so I've decided to leave.

I've sent an email to admin@orkut.com as they say in their help pages (you can see it below), so I'm waiting for my removal in the next hours. I don't like to support a company whhich goes under the DCMA and which intents to have copyright ownership for all material users posts in there. They say that they'll never sale, disclose personal information but also said that:
You understand and agree that orkut.com may access, preserve, and disclose your personal information and the contents of your account if required to do so by law or in a good faith belief that such access preservation or disclosure is reasonably necessary to comply with legal process or protect the rights and property of orkut.com, its affiliates or the public.

Parece que tendre que hacer algo con esto de los idiomas, en realidad me gustaría seguir haciendo posts en Español, que es mi idioma natal, pero también en inglés (the widely used bla bla bla language). Como sea tengo que escribir algo sobre esto de los idiomas y la internacionalización en un futuro, espero no muy lejano.

Hoy me encontre con un libro que me estaba buscando, lectura interesantisima y encaminadora, veamos como nos va. Por otro lado presentaré una ponencia para el V Foro Internacional de Software Livre a realizarse en Porto Alegre del 3 al 5 de Junio, días despues del DebConf4, quiero hablar de localización de programas (de software libre en específico).

Ahora tengo que hacer un backup/migración de mi disco duro brrr heh ahi voy afio!... y bueno luego sleep()

Well after lots of code cleanup, some rewrite and many many debug, we have an registration script working as the best ones ;)

Thanks to KoV and spectra who made it happen! I've also enyoyed to hack some PHP and put in practice my isane and maniac improvement hunting.

I hope all goes fine as it seems to be going, we'll have work since Feb. 10th so I better sleep a whole day :D
We need to write some administrative scripts for managing registrations also, but is not something urgent. Now I have to delete previous registrations on our testing db BEWARE!. Heck! I've found a nasty bug on POST for ', seems that PHP is configured to allow ' on posts and not put them as \' weird.

I finally got my usbmgr package into the archives.

It's nice to have it there and I've learned a lot of packaging and also how it works. I also intend to take care of xhangglider also, I've already sent the RFS and I'll upload to mentors archive to let people to check it.

I was in packaging mood also and I've finally (2nd try is the winner) I got hoz Debianized. Hoz stands for Hacha Open Source is a Open Source version of the infamous win32 virus^W^Wprogram hacha wrote by tabo. It has a nice GTK interface, and hell yes we have split but is nice to have this hoz.
